DisparityThanks to its multi-billion-dollar TV deals, the Premier League is often celebrated as a UK Inc. success story. Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC/Getty ImagesBy targeting talents from lower-league academies, Premier League clubs don’t have to pay inflated transfer fees. The mooted introduction of an independent regulator comes against the backdrop of some Premier League clubs falling foul of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Earlier this month, Everton were handed a further two-point deduction for allegedly breaching Premier League financial rules. Relegated from the Premier League in 2023, Leicester denies any wrongdoing and opened legal proceedings against the Premier League and the EFL, but could face a points deduction if found guilty.

CNN —Liverpool’s chances of a historic quadruple in Jürgen Klopp’s final season at the club are over after falling to a 4-3 extra time defeat against bitter rival Manchester United in a frenetic FA Cup quarterfinal. Goals from Scott McTominay, Antony, Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo gave United the win in a topsy-turvy FA Cup classic at Old Trafford in Manchester. “The first 35 minutes I think was the best minutes from our season,” United manager Erik ten Hag told the ITV broadcast after the game. In a game as hectic as this though, no lead was ever truly safe, as United proved in the second half of extra time. United fans were treated to a win in a chaotic cup tie.

With the English Premier League club vying to win an historic quadruple this season, and with injuries ravaging the senior squad, manager Jurgen Klopp has turned to the club’s famed academy for help. And while Danns and Koumas got on the scoresheet, 19-year-old Bobby Clark produced an assist for the latter. CNN —Liverpool celebrated the beginning of the end of manager Jürgen Klopp’s time at the club in the best possible fashion, winning the Carabao Cup on Sunday after defeating Chelsea 1-0 in the dying moments of extra-time following a tense final at Wembley Stadium. And that tension ratcheted up as the missed chances for both teams piled up, including a disallowed goal disallowed apiece, culminating in Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher making several spectacular, scrambled saves as the clock ticked into the red to force extra-time. “All the young boys on the pitch on extra-time. It’s incredible, I’m so proud of the team,” he told broadcaster Sky Sports. This is a developing story and will be updated.

Jürgen Klopp will unexpectedly step down as Liverpool soccer team manager at the end of this season, the club said Friday. The charismatic German coach joined Liverpool in 2015 and led the storied club to a European Champions League title in 2019 and an English Premier League title in 2020. Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers at the helm in October 2015, when Liverpool was languishing in 10th place in the Premier League. In the following year, Klopp led the club to a fourth-place finish in his first full season in charge. Liverpool is the most successful club in English soccer by number of awards, winning 68 trophies over its 132-year history.

“It is below the standards you expect at Manchester United,” Ten Hag told reporters after Wednesday’s defeat. Rasmus Højlund joined Manchester United from Italian club Atalanta in August for a reported fee of $87.7 million. “You just can’t quite get the stability that Ferguson brought, and since then, people have come and gone,” Dutch football expert Michael Statham told CNN Sport. CNN —Manchester City suffered a first defeat of the season against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup as star striker Erling Haaland was left on the bench. It remained 1-0, however, condemning Guardiola to a third consecutive early exit in the Carabao Cup after defeats against Southampton last year and West Ham the year before. Oli Scarff/AFP/Getty ImagesAfter winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup last year, Wednesday’s loss means that Man City will be unable to go one better and win an unprecedented quadruple this season. “There are guys who have played a lot of minutes … I decided with this lineup, I always have done that in the Carabao Cup since day one when I arrived. In the Carabao Cup I always play the players who never regularly play.”Prior to the game, Guardiola had lamented not being able to travel by plane between Manchester and Newcastle.

While Erik Ten Hag's side set aside a difficult start to the season and cruised comfortably through at Old Trafford, Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers and Luton Town were knocked out by lower-division opponents. Wolves went 2-0 up and then lost 3-2 at Championship (second tier) high-flyers Ipswich Town while Premier League newcomers Luton were beaten 1-0 at League One (third tier) side Exeter City. Vincent Kompany's Burnley, without a win in the Premier League so far this season, overran League Two (fourth tier) opponents Salford City 4-0 with a second-string team. The match was the night's only fixture pitting two top flight clubs against each other and they will meet again in the league at Old Trafford on Saturday. The draw for the fourth round will be after Wednesday's matches, with 12 Premier League clubs in action and last year's losing finalists Newcastle United hosting Premier League champions Manchester City.

MANCHESTER, England, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Manchester City will be without injured Jack Grealish, John Stones and Mateo Kovacic for their Premier League clash against West Ham United on Saturday, and manager Pep Guardiola was unsure about their return for the start of the Champions League. "We'll see step by step," Guardiola told reporters on Friday. Walker was left out of City's squad for the Champions League final after he started both legs of the semi-final. "I was sad that he didn't get to play in the Champions League final, but look how good his response has been since then," Guardiola said. But anticipation is building for the visit of West Ham, who will become the first top-flight team to play a league match at Kenilworth Road since Aston Villa 31 years ago. The volume created by the Hatters fans crammed in on Friday will shake the 118-year-old stadium to its foundations. Forward Cauley Woodrow, who scored in the League Cup win at Kenilworth Road against Gillingham this week, said Luton needed to turn their home into an intimidating 'fortress'. Arsenal's priority will be avoiding any repeat of the early goals they have conceded on a regular basis at home of late. Andreas Pereira's strike for Fulham after 57 seconds last weekend meant the Gunners became the first Premier League team to concede a first-minute goal three times in a calendar year.

Ten Hag primed to end false dawns at Man United

Since United last won the Premier League title under Alex Ferguson in 2013, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have all failed to revive former glories - but Ten Hag appears to be making progress. Last year, he took charge of a United side that had collected their lowest-ever Premier League points tally (58) in the 2021-22 season and were in a five-year trophy drought. The turnaround has been remarkable, with a top-four finish in the Premier League, the League Cup trophy and a place in the FA Cup final to show for last season. "I think the difference is, with reference to last year, now we have the foundation with this squad," Ten Hag told reporters. If Ten Hag can stop the uncertainty over the club's ownership from spilling over into his dressing room, United have reason to believe they can challenge seriously to win the Premier League and end the recent dominance of Manchester City.

Liverpool fans have a history of booing the national anthem, most recently doing so before last season’s FA Cup final at Wembley – many also booed Prince William when he appeared on the pitch. So why exactly do Liverpool fans have a history of booing the monarchy? Booing of the national anthem at football matches when the team played at Wembley – which was frequent given Liverpool’s dominance of English football in this era – became widespread and remains so today. Liverpool fans have a history of booing the national anthem. And, in an article written on Friday, football journalist Dominic King suggested Liverpool fans might just sing the club’s own anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” instead of “God Save The King” on Saturday.
